Welcome to the board for our brand new IRC channel!
What is IRC?Internet Relay Chat is a kind of chatroom that is accessed with the use of the
irc:// protocol and an IRC client...sounds complicated, doesn't it? Well not really.
There are many networks - Freenode, Dalnet, you name it. To access a network, you would go to
irc://freenode for example if you wanted to access Freenode, it would open your IRC client and connect to the Freenode network. If you wanted to go to a channel after it, you type # and then the channel name. For example, if you wanted to go to a channel named "channel" on Freenode, you would go
irc://freenode/#channel, or in your IRC client, you would connect to Freenode, and enter the command /join #channel.
It isn't as complicated as it sounds. Read on for further instructions.
Opening the IRC ChannelWaddle World's official channel is ran by me under the Freenode network. That means you can access it at
irc://freenode/#waddleworld or type /join #waddleworld at the Freenode network in an IRC client, which is needed to open any IRC channel. Here are a few:
mIRC -
http://www.mirc.com/If you have Firefox and don't want to waste too much disk space, here's a cool addon that I use called ChatZilla -
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/16Install it and move on. Connect to our IRC by typing
irc://freenode/#waddleworld in the Address bar or opening your IRC client, connecting to Freenode, and typing /join #waddleworld.
If successful, you should be on our chat channel.
RegisteringTo register on IRC, you get tons of more features plus you can become operators (mod/admin on the network) if you're good. If you want to register, you register for the entire network you're on. For example, registering for our IRC channel would register you on the Freenode network. Change your username to something unique, not something widely used, like on forums and stuff. If using ChatZilla, at the bottom left, click your username, Change Nickname, and change it.
The final step of registering is contacting the nickname server. Enter the command:
/msg NickServ register -password-
You are sending the nickname server a PM to register your nickname on Freenode. For -password-, enter a password you use to log in. If successful, NickServ will reply saying you're registered. Whenever you want to login, change to your username you registered with. If you're logged out, NickServ will kick you out in a few minutes if you don't log in with your password. So, PM the server again to log you in:
/msg NickServ identify -password-
Where -password- is the password you registered with. Tada! You're in.
CommandsDid you know the chatbox at the bottom of our portal and index was derived from IRC? It's pretty much the same commands.
User CommandsNormal text = normal text and chat.
/me -action- = Tells that you did an action. For example, /me likes pizza would show up as -username- likes pizza. I'm sure everyone was familiar with that.
/exit = Disconnects you from the channel and network, and closes your client. A reason can also be displayed; enter a reason after it and it will be displayed to the public as well.
/away -reason- = Marks you as away in case you have to go somewhere for a sec.
/back = If you are away, it will mark you as normal.
/msg -username- -message- = PMs a user. -username- is the user you want to PM, and -message- is your message. For example, /msg Sonicfan574 HI! would send me a message saying HI!
Operator CommandsCommands for the operators only.
/kick -user- = Kicks a bad user from the IRC channel. They may relogin.
/ban -user- = Bans a user from the channel for an indefinite period of time, can only be unbanned by an operator.
/unban -user- = Unbans a banned user.
/mod -user- = Gives a user operator status.
/unmod -user- = Takes away operator status from an operator. Can't be used on the owner.
That's about it.
I'll see ya there, have fun!
